7 photos you will love from state cheer

After the chants, tumbling runs and athleticism from 100 cheer squads from around the state, four new state champions were confirmed at the 12th installment of the Illinois High School Association's Competitive Cheerleading State Final on Saturday. In front of what may have been a record crowd for the event Belvidere North, Breese Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lemont emerged as 2017 state champions across for separate divisions through entertaining performances.

The Cougars of Breese Central, improving their score by almost two points in the championship round, won the Small Team title. Meanwhile, Lemont having qualified for Saturday's championship round in sixth place on Friday, vaulted to the top spot in the Medium Team competition over the Columbia Eagles, the only southern Illinois contender in the division, and last year's champion Oak Forest.

Lincoln-Way East secured its third championship title out of the last four years in the Large Team division. The Griffins, whose opening routine put them in third place, brought their A-game the next day to knock the defending champion Joliet West out of the #1 position with a solid routine of glitter and gusty tumbling runs. West maintained their dominance over the rest of the field to finish second and Sandburg rounded out the top three teams to take home bronze medals.

What a difference of hard work makes. After finishing the Coed team competition as runner-up in 2016, Belvidere North cruised to victory dashing Buffalo Grove's bid for three-peat bragging rights. By a narrow one point decision, Conant High School finished ahead of the highly entertaining Bison for the runner-up trophy.
