Ten crucial, must see photos from state wrestling

This Thursday will be the 80th installment of the Illinois High School Association's individual state wrestling championship and ninth year the have sponsored the season finale as a three-class event. More than 600 competitors, fans and spectators will fill the seats at the State Farm Center for the three-day event.

To celebrate the IHSA's milestone as well as the hard work and dedication of athletes from around the state who rose to be some of the top competitors in their sport, PhotoNews Media is adding dozens of photos from our past coverage of the annual state tournament. Mercer County wrestler Zach Nelson positions himself for a single leg takedown on Monmouth-Roseville's Gage Hedges during their first round 152-pound bout at the IHSA state wresting meet in 2012. Nelson, who toyed with Hedges on his way to a 16-3 major decision, went on to finish the individual season finale in second place and an impressive 42-1 junior year record. (PhotoNews File Photo)

Deshane suffered a 3-1 loss in overtime to end his bid for a 2012 state title. The loss help drive the senior through the wrestleback bracket to 4th place finish. Mattoon's Ryan Paige (34-7) tries to keep from being throw for a takedown during his 220-pound Class 2A first round match against Bowen's Dequence Goodman (34-1). Working his way back to the top, Goodman went on to finish with the weight class' bronze medal after a successful campaign through the back half of the bracket at the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals in 2012.
