Quincy Notre Dame wins girls basketball state title
NORMAL -- The Quincy Notre Dame girls basketball program added another entry into the Illinois High School Association records, collecting its third Class 2A state title after knocking off the Winnebago Indians, 63-56. The Lady Raiders are the only Class 2A program with multiple state titles, the first two coming in back-to-back campaigns in 2011-12.
Notre Dame's Abbey Schreacke set a new title game scoring record in Class 2A after draining 35 points during her 32 minutes on the hardwood. The junior displaced the previous record of 27 points held by Bloomington Central Catholic's Allie Norton, who coincidentally set the record against Quincy Notre Dame back in 2010.
Schreacke's name will also be listed for delivering the highest free throw average in a state game after making all 14 of her shots from the charity stripe. Only one other player who went to the line 10 or more times in a title game converted 100% of her attempts from the free-throw line. Chandler Ryan, of Morton, went 10-for-10 against Rochester in their Class 3A title game in 2015.
Schreacke also finished 11 rebounds and four steals leading QND to their 30th win of the season.
Fellow junior Blair Eftink also turned in a double-digit scoring effort finishing with 13 points and four blocks before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Eftink was also effective at the free-throw line going 7-for-8 against the Indians.
Winnebago (35-3), who had four players in double figures, was paced by Renee Rittmeyer's 16 points. Teammate Miyah Brown posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
Campbell Schrank and Sarah Seger contributed 10 points apiece, but it wasn't enough to bring home the first-place trophy. However, the 2021-22 squad's second-place finish is the program's highest finish in school history.
